In one of the most daring theft incidents, a gang of suspected robbers broke into Equity bank, Kayole branch on Saturday and made away with an unknown amount of cash.
According to reports, the suspects gained access to the bank by drilling a hole leading to the bank’s safe.
After breaking in, they took away the safe and carried the ATM machine with an unknown amount of money inside, the Star reports.
On the other hand, the Standard indicates that after the suspects gained entry into the bank, they went into the strong room where they managed to break into two huge safes and carted away a huge amount of money estimated to be in millions.
The security officers manning the bank only discovered that the safe and ATM were missing on Sunday morning.
Detectives who visited the scene on Sunday were surprised to find out that the alarm system and CCTV cameras had been switched off during the incident.
Police indicated that the robbery might have been orchestrated with the help of bank staff, adding that the employees are expected to record statements to help in the investigations.
Confirming the incident, Nairobi police boss Japheth Koomeย stated that they were informed of the incident long after itย happened.
โEquity headquarters detected unusual activities at the Kayole branch and raised the manager who went to check and realised the strong room had been tampered with and cash stolen,โ he said.
In 2015, three men posing as Equity Bank auditors stole Sh30 Million from the Othaya branch in Nyeri County.
The three are said to have entered the bank at around 6am through the rear entrance and told the branch deputy manager that they had been authorised to carry out auditing.
Once they gained entry, they unleashed knives, guns and ordered the guards to lie down before they stashed money in three sacks.
