ST. PAUL, Minn.โFour credit unions in Minnesota along with the Minnesota Credit Union Network hosted representatives from 12 Kenyan credit unions, which are known as SACCOs or Savings and Credit Cooperatives.
The visit was coordinated in partnership with the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) and was part of a program designed to explore the operational environment for credit unions in the United States and witness first-hand how they serve and support their communities, according to the MnCUN.
โOne of our goals in the meeting between Minnesotaโs credit unions and the delegation from Kenya was to highlight credit unions that have noteworthy examples of innovation, successful products and services, community engagement efforts, and initiatives that set them apart from other financial institutions,โ said WOCCU Program Managerย Thomas Belekevich.ย โAdditionally, the meeting was an opportunity to strengthen connections between financial cooperatives around the world through a two-way exchange of ideas about the shared challenges we face.โ
During the trip to the United States, the SACCO representatives visited the Minnesota Credit Union Network, Hiway Federal Credit Union, SPIRE Credit Union, Wings Financial Credit Union, and Mayo Employees Federal Credit Union.
