MSAMBWENI MP Omar Zonga has been sued for child negligence by a woman who she claims they bore a child together. Mwanafuraha Sauti moved to the children’s court saying they cohabited with the politician since 2003 and their child was born on September 1 2005. She told the court that they separated after the child was born and the defendant has not been supporting them. “I have since then made several efforts to resolve the issue amicably but all my efforts with certain institutions, including inviting him to meetings with the children’s department and the Christian Legal Education, Aid and Research, have been unsuccessful,” she said.
The woman, who says she is jobless and lives in Ukunda says she cannot sustain the needs of her child. She is demanding a total of Sh801,400 since they broke up. In the amount, she wants Sh30,000 to cater for food every month, Sh44,400 school fees, shoes, books and clothes Sh56,000, while transport is Sh3,200 and a further Sh10,000 for medical care. She told the court that since the defendant is employed as an MP for Msambweni constituency, he earns a sufficient amount that can maintain their child.
The woman wants the court to rule that both of them have equal parental responsibility and that Zonga should make adequate contributions towards the upkeep of the child. She further claimed that the MP has denied her audience and has been unapproachable when confronted over the issue. The MP has been served with the court documents and further issued with summons to enter appearance but has yet to do so.
