The prime minister’s office is tonight the epicentre of a bitter exchange, pitting pm raila odinga’s outspoken former advisor on coalition affairs miguna miguna on one hand, and the chief of staff in the premier’s office, caroli omondi on the other.

Omondi has accused miguna of political witch-hunting, and revealed that miguna was suspended for antagonizing cabinet ministers, mps and other members of the executive, conduct that jeopardised the smooth running of the coalition government.

Miguna Miguna’s 2012 memoir, Peeling Back the Mask, ignited a significant political controversy in Kenya, particularly concerning his allegations against Caroli Omondi, then Chief of Staff in Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s office.

Miguna accused Omondi of corruption and questioned the legitimacy of his wealth, notably alleging that Omondi had purchased the Heron Court Hotel in Nairobi for KSh 800 million—a sum far exceeding his official salary.

In response, Omondi instructed his lawyer to initiate legal action against both Miguna and the publishers of his book for defamation .

He also sought to involve the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and the police, aiming to investigate the allegations and potentially pursue criminal charges.

Miguna further claimed that Omondi was implicated in the maize scandal, alleging that Omondi had issued verbal instructions to the Strategic Grain Reserve to release contaminated maize to the domestic market .

These allegations were reportedly discussed in a tense meeting between Miguna, Odinga, and Omondi, where Odinga appeared anxious and questioned Omondi about the alleged phone call to the National Cereals and Produce Board.

The controversy led to Miguna’s suspension from his position in Odinga’s office. Miguna contended that the reinstatement letter issued by Omondi did not reflect the terms agreed upon and was inconsistent with prior communications, prompting him to decline the reinstatement.

While Omondi did not publicly respond to these allegations, his legal actions indicated a strong rebuttal. The dispute highlighted tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement and raised questions about accountability and transparency in Kenya’s political elite.
