The Fear of Numbers: Theological Discourse

The Fear of Numbers: Theological Discourse
The Fear of Numbers: Theological Discourse

I heard people in my village talking about giving birth to more children in order to keep the numbers up. In my friends village, people believe that the tyranny of numbers is becoming a real head – ache. When Kenyans voted to pass the new constitution, many people did not realize that this was going to cause problems: Human imperfection?

Democracy is considered the most appropriate system of Government. The idea that humanity can make their own decisions and determine their future is basically what democracy is. Barack Obama won because he got the majority of votes. It did not matter that most of his votes came from the cities, the majority principle won and the minority submitted! Uhuru Kenyatta won because he got most of the votes. It did not matter which ethnic group voted for him.

Genesis chapter 6 narrates, โ€œWhen people began to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that they were fair; and they took wives for themselves of all that they chose. Then the Lord said, โ€˜My spirit shall not abide in mortals for ever, for they are flesh; their days shall be one hundred and twenty years.โ€™ย Many daughters were being born to men and the sons of God, (some believe these to be fallen angels) made children with them. In this case giants were born and if allowed to live long, would reproduce same kind and the evil in their heart would permeate generations. Again in Genesis 11, โ€œNow the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, โ€˜Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.โ€™ And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, โ€˜Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.โ€™ The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And the Lord said, โ€˜Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one anotherโ€™s speech.โ€™ So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city.

Israel voted theocracy out and demanded that God cease being King over them, โ€œWe want a King like the other nations,โ€ they demanded. American civil rights movement was a fight against majority principles: Black people are not to vote. Before that, women in America could not vote: A majority principle then.

The smaller tribes in Kenya have a right to fear because the new constitution founded Kenyaโ€™s political future on a democratic majority. Yet again, they do not have to fear because they can also gang up and use their collective numbers to gain the presidency. God did not want to restrict manโ€™s will, but He also reserved the right to protect man against himself.ย ย He also reserved the right to let majority rule.

In fact, the number of people who will enter Heaven is determined by human reproduction! So is the number in Hell. The mystery of our God!
