Kenyan Actress Wins Best Actress Award In London

Kenyan Star Lizz Njagah won last Friday the best actress award in London Greek Film Festival for her performance in our Greek/Kenyan road movie โ€œThe Return of Lazarusโ€! This is courtesy of Historia Films.

The director of the movie and Lizzโ€™s husband, Alexandros Konstantaras, manage to attend the festival and collect the award for her. In his speech he thanked the festival on Lizzโ€™s behalf as well as the people who supported the project. He also said that he felt justified for casting Lizz in this challenging part, which was a bit different from what Lizz had acted until then and she manage not only to deliver a great performance but she even managed to overcome the language barrier.

Lizz from her side learned the good news while in Nigeria during shooting for the popular African soap โ€œTinselโ€ and she wrote on her facebook page:

โ€œOh wow, just found out that I won the Best Actress award at the London Greek Film Festival for my role in โ€˜Return Of Lazarusโ€™ A film that is so close to my heart.. I dedicate my award to my husband. You are amazing baby. Thank you for all your encouragement and support. Couldnโ€™t have done it without you.. And to all the wonderful cast and crew of the movie.. YOU ROCK! And finally Baba God who made ALL of this possible. Amenโ€

The 6th London Greek Film Festival drew to an end having showcased entries of high quality in all categories of film and script. True to its aim of being progressive and independent, the festival has developed to a meeting point for Greek film from all over the world. This year it featured 69 selected films of all genres: fiction feature films, short films, documentaries, experimental films, animation and video art. 68 of them were screened as part of the festivalโ€™s competition. 43 were a UK premiere and 14 a world premiere. There were also 19 selected competing scripts, of fiction feature and short films.

โ€œWe are in the final phase of determining whether arming more civilians or hiring more police reservists would be a valuable strategy to help in combating crime,โ€ he said. Mr Kimaiyo noted that during last monthโ€™s attack at Westgate, armed civilians proved that it was safe to have guns in the hands of good people.

โ€œCivilians, reservists and the police were able to work hand in hand to evacuate people at the Westgate mall,โ€ he added. The police chief who addressed journalists in his office in Nairobi on Wednesday disclosed they were studying the concept used by Northern Ireland in its fight against fundamentalism.

The concept states that โ€œit is better for the โ€˜guys with gunsโ€™ to be outnumbered by the good guys with guns.โ€

He, however, noted strict measures would be followed in identifying those to be armed.

โ€œCivilians will be required to apply and be vetted before being allowed to carry guns,โ€ Mr Kimaiyo said.

He added that the law allows the police to employ special police to help combat crime.

The police chief the public is allowed to volunteer information on individuals who can be hired as reservists or to be armed.

The Inspector-General called on Kenyans to embrace the โ€˜Nyumba Kumiโ€™ concept which, he said would provide and guarantee security.
