Machakos County Deputy Governor Bernard Kiala is facing impeachment after a majority of the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) signed a motion to oust him.

The impeachment motion follows allegations of abuse of office and gross misconduct against Mr Kiala.

The speaker of Machakos county assembly has constituted a special sub-committee comprising of 11 assembly members with six from the majority and five from the minority that will probe the allegations.

According to Machakos County Assembly Secretary Leonard Wambua Katela, 43 out of 59 MCAs signed the motion to impeach Mr Kiala.

The deputy governor is now set to appear before the assemblyโ€™s ad hoc committee.

โ€œWe have started the legal procedures of impeaching the deputy governor and we expect to have him appear before the ad hoc committee for which I am the secretary to have a fair hearing (on) the impeachment issue,โ€ said Mr Katela.

The committee, which was formed on Wednesday by assembly members, will table its findings in seven days after which the motion will be further debated and the fate of Mr Kiala decided.
