In-patient coordinator Louise Lwai-Lume said the senator had to undergo a thorough check before the operation.

Dr Lwai-Lume, however, did not disclose where the bullet was lodged, saying this was confidential information.

Tongaren MP Eseli Simiyu, who visited the senator in hospital on Tuesday, said that the shooting was โ€œan accidentโ€.

Senate Speaker Ekwe Ethuro said the matter would be dealt with once Mr Munyes had recovered.

Mr Munyes was shot in the hip on Sunday just minutes after driving off from a meeting with leaders from Ethiopia to discuss peace building.

Reports indicate that he was seated next to the driver while the bodyguard was in the back seat.

On reaching Loarengak in Turkana North, it is claimed the bodyguardโ€™s gun discharged accidentally and the bullet ricocheted off the floor of the car and hit the senatorโ€™s left hip.

The fate of the bodyguard, who is said to be Mr Munyesโ€™ cousin, is still unclear.
