The Nubian community in Kibera is demanding that the Government hands them title deeds before beginning the slum upgrading project in the area.
The community gave the government a three day ultimatum to consider them for dialogue or else they would resort to demonstrations to disrupt the whole project.
Addressing the media at Makina Mosque Saturday, the community expressed fears that if the government kicked off the project in the area, they would never get their land which they have been fighting for the last two hundred years.
The project was launched on Friday by Devolution Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru, Nairobi County Governor Evans Kidero and area Member of Parliament Ken Okoth.
The Nubian Rights Forum (NRF) spokesperson Shafi Ali Hussein said that through title deeds, their rights would be recognized as required by the Article 10(2) and 174(e) of the Constitution which provides for among others the protection and promotion of the rights of the marginalized communities.
โThe project should only be restarted once the Nubian land title has been released and we therefore ask the relevant Ministry to help in speeding up the process,โ he said.
The issue of compensating the community has been an on and off exercise and even the Lands Cabinet Secretary was reported to have toured the area this year and told the group to be patient saying the exercise of issuing them with the title deeds will begin soon.
