Kenya: Kajiado Central Member of Parliament Rtd Major General Joseph Nkaissery on Monday said his Orange Democratic Party (ODM) cannot stop him from taking over the powerful Interior Security job once his nomination to the cabinet is confirmed.
Speaking to the media for the first time since President Uhuru Kenyatta announced his appointment to replace Mr Joseph Ole Lenku, Nkaissery said the decision to take over the job lies with him and the people of Kajiado Central and not the party.
”I’m still an active member of ODM, but this will not stop me from serving Kenyans in any capacity” He told journalists during a press conference in Kajiado town.
The law maker was referring to CORD leader Raila Odinga’s demand that ODM should be given a free run during the by-election or else the party will not allow him to take the new job.
However Mr Nkaissery promised Kenyans that he will give his best once given the opportunity to serve.
”If parliament approves me and the President assents to my letter of appointment, I will give the best of my knowledge. However, I will not work alone” said Nkaissery.
He is expected to be vetted by the House committee on National Security and Administration chaired by Asman Kamama on Thursday morning, while a debate will be held at the chambers in the afternoon.
This is given the fact that Nkaissery’s nomination will trigger a by-election in his Kajiado Central, the only seat held by ODM in the entire Kajiado County heavily dominated by Jubilee.
The MP appealed to aspiring candidates willing to contest the seat, to hold their horses as he was still in the office.
”I have no any preferred person to succeed me; however, any willing candidate should seek the people’s mandate” said Nkaissery.
Three aspiring candidates from President Uhuru’sย National Alliance Party (TNA) have shown interest in the seat. They are Mr Simon Peter Ole Nkeri, Memusi Kanchori andย Patrick Tutui.
The three are losers of last general election after they contested in different party’s, however, ย Mr Tutui contested on a TNA ticket and became second from Major General Nkaissery who won the election
During the last general election, only Nkaissery among other four MP’s was elected on an ODM ticket.
