A suspect arrested in connection with the killing of Kabete MP George Muchai will remain in custody for the next 14 days, a court ruled on Friday.
The court granted the continued custodial orders against Mr Simon Wambugu Gichamba so that โhe may help in tracing his accomplices.โ
Mr Gichamba, 20, is suspected to have killed the politician in the pre-dawn shooting last Saturday along Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi in an attack where the MPโs driver and two guards were also felled.
Mr Muchaiโs burial is planned for Friday while his aides will be laid to rest over the weekend and early next week.
Prosecutor Robert Kyaa said the suspect is assisting in tracing his accomplices who are still at large.
โHe was arrested on February 12 at Kangemi and for the purposes of ongoing investigations it is necessary that he remains detained in police custody for a period of 14 days,โ the prosecutor said.
INVESTIGATIONS
Mr Wambugu who at first appeared not to follow proceedings did not object to the request for detention but was surprised that he was being linked to a murder.
โAm I being charged with murder?โ he asked in Swahili but the prosecutor reassured him that he was only being held for investigations pending a possible murder charge.
The prosecutor said there were compelling reasons for Mr Wambuguโs stay in custody to help โwith investigations.โ
โThe suspect is to be charged with murderโฆ investigations are incomplete and the police require more time,โ Mr Kyaa said.
He said the suspect was being investigated for the politicianโs murder, driver Stephen Ituu Wambugu, and the two bodyguards Samwel Kimathi Kairika and Samwel Lakaley Matanta.
The suspect has been detained at the Central Police Station and will return to court on February 27.
