Two traffic police officers were copped receiving bribes from motorists by EACC officials on Monday.
The officers were caught red-handed at about 3pm at Mavueni area in Kilifi, along the Mombasa-Malindi highway.
Some of the cash was found strewn in the bushes in which they hid after engaging police in running battles.
The bribes collected were in denominations of Sh50, Sh100, and Sh200, said George Ojowi, EACC Deputy Director in charge of Upper Coast offices .
Ojowi, who led the operation, said they were tipped off by a member of the public.
โEACC officers from the upper Coast region carried out a sting operation at the roadblock and arrested two police officers based at Kilifi traffic base,โโ he said.
The officers were taken to Malindi police station after they were grilled for hours at the offices of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission in the town.
Ojowi said they will be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.
Thirteen graft cases, involving public offices and state officials, have been received at the Malindi office since its opening last Friday, Ojowi said.
He said cases of corruption in Kilifi and Tana River counties, and massive lang grabbing in the Lapsset project are being investigated.
Noting that this was the first arrest since the opening of the Malindi offices last Friday, he urged the public to continue assisting the EACC to fight corruption.
