Senator Mike Sonkoโs quest for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat will overcome a big obstacle on Saturday when he graduates from the Kenya Methodist Universityย with a degree in Business administration.
Though still publicly coy about his ambition for the governorโs seat,ย Senator Sonko has been gearing up to replace Governor Evans Kidero.
โI want to tell my constituents and Kenyans in general that Iโm not graduating coz (sic) I want to become the Nairobi Governor. Iโm not graduating coz (sic) I want to please voters in Nairobi to vote for me. This is not the time to ask for elective seats or votes. This is the time to focus on service delivery to the people,โ the Senator ย said in a Facebook post on Thursday.
Not even a congratulatory message from his political arch-rival Governor Kidero could mask the rivalry between the two politicians for the top seat.
PROUD OF YOU
Writing on Facebook on Thursday, Governor Kidero said: โCongratulations are in order Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko as you prepare to graduate tomorrow! You have walked a long way to reach this goal. You are truly an inspiration and demonstration to all that hard work and dedication does pay. We are very proud of you and well done!โ
The two leaders have often traded public accusations, the last of which saw the Governor accuse the Senator of involvement in drug trafficking.
ANTI-GRAFT CAMPAIGN
As part of his campaign strategy, Senator Sonko has initiated an anti-corruption campaign against Governor Kidero in Nairobi and at one point even addressed the County Assembly where he purported to table evidence on the same.
โNow nobody can stop me from vying for the governorโs position. I will be graduating and embark on my plans to save Nairobi from corruption,โ he said in a previous interview.
