A Kenyan professional runner living in Auburn, Maine,ย reportedly outran a pair of black bears last week Wednesday.

Moninda Marube, a 38-year-old student at the University of Maine,ย was out for an 18-mile run around 5 a.m. when he spotted two black bears in his path.

โ€œI saw them crossing [the road]. When they spotted me, they stopped and I stopped,โ€ he toldย Sun Journal.

โ€œI had to think very fast.โ€

โ€œI had to make a quick decision: either to climb up a tree or runย into the lake,โ€ Marube continued.

Because he cannot swim, Marubeย opted to run for his dear life and sought shelter in a vacant camp building.

โ€œI cannot say itโ€™s my feet that saved me,โ€ he told local television station WCSH. โ€œItโ€™s God that saved me.โ€

Marube,ย who finished third in the 2012 Maine Marathon and won the 2013 half-marathon, said heโ€™d once encountered a leopard perched in a tree while alone in Kenya.

โ€œI donโ€™t fear lions,โ€ he said. โ€œBut a bear is scary.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been running this road for four years. Iโ€™ve never thought of meeting a bear here,โ€ Marube told theย Sun Journal.
