Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has donated Sh1.2 million to small-scale traders whose businesses were destroyed and looted by NASA demonstrators last Friday.
The traders, who hawk their wares along Jogoo Road, incurred losses of more than Sh5 million following riots and chaos that marred NASA leader Raila Odinga’s homecoming from US.
During a meeting at City Hall on Thursday, the Governor also offered to clear hospital bills for a victim allegedly sexually assaulted by goons.ย The goons also made away with over Sh200,000 from the victim’s M-Pesa shop.
He said Sh1 million will be shared among the 48 traders and Sh200,000 to the trader attacked by goons.
The woman is currently undergoing treatment at Nairobi Women’s Hospital.
Ochudo Achieng’, who spoke on behalf of the affected, thanked the Governor for offering to help irrespective of the people’s political or ethnic backgrounds.
Sonko urged the traders not to allow perceived political differences to divide them and pledged support for other victims.
At least five people were killed and goods of unknown value destroyed and looted during the incident.ย This was while police engaged NASA supporters after they defied orders not to march to JKIA to welcome Raila.
