Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has reacted to information that Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has nominated Lawyer Miguna Miguna as his deputy and forward his name to the County Assembly Speaker for vetting.
In a single tweet, the Jubilee senator opposed the candidature of Miguna declaring that he will not be the Deputy Governor of Nairobi:
This comes as the first public opposition to the nomination of the self-proclaimed NRM general as the replacement to Polycarp Igathe who resigned in January as Sonko’s deputy.
However, Governor Sonko’s office is yet to make an official confirmaion and Miguna Miguna appears be in the dark.
Speaking in an interview with a local station on Thursday morning, Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi confirmed that she had received a letter from the governor but did not disclose the name of the nominee.
“The governor has given us a nominee. We will follow the law. The Constitution is clear that a deputy governor needs to be a Kenyan citizen. I would tell Miguna to first clear his issues with the Kenyan government. He is Canadian. That procedure can take us three to four months,”Speaker Elachi revealed.
News of the nomination was communicated by Miguna’s lawyer Cliff Ombeta.
