As the Cord alliance ended its three day campaign tour of western Kenya on Sunday, its presidential candidate Prime Minister Raila Odinga appeared to play bare knuckle politics when he took his opponents in the Jubilee Alliance head-on, casting aspersion on their integrity.

Raila asked the leaders to ivee up to their jubilee name and return whatever public property that they may have acquired illegally. NTV’s Ouko Okusa reports.

Raila’s Engagement in Bungoma

In January 2024, Raila Odinga visited Bungoma to spearhead an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) membership recruitment drive. During this visit, he addressed a rally at Bungoma Posta grounds, accompanied by key ODM leaders, including Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi and Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.

The event aimed to strengthen ODM’s presence in the Western region and engage directly with local constituents .

In the subsequent Bungoma senatorial by-election, following Moses Wetang’ula’s appointment as Speaker of the National Assembly, Raila endorsed Wafula Wamunyinyi as the ODM candidate.

Raila expressed confidence in Wamunyinyi’s ability to represent Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party effectively, signaling ODM’s commitment to reclaiming political ground in the region.

Luhya Community’s Political Dynamics

The Luhya community‘s support was pivotal in the 2022 presidential election. In Bungoma County, William Ruto secured 63.15% of the vote, while Raila Odinga received only 35.92%, a disparity that underscored the community’s shift in allegiance .

Moses Wetang’ula, a prominent Luhya leader, has been vocal about his departure from Raila’s camp, citing a sense of betrayal.

He has since advocated for Luhya unity and collaboration with other communities to form future political alliances.

Raila’s Strategy to Reconnect with Luhya Voters

Raila’s recent statements and actions suggest a strategic attempt to reconnect with the Luhya electorate.

He has emphasized his ancestral ties to the Wanga community, referencing his lineage to Nabongo Wanga, a revered Luhya leader. This move appears aimed at endearing himself to Luhya voters and reinforcing his commitment to their interests.

As the 2027 general elections approach, Raila’s efforts in Bungoma and the broader Western region will be critical in determining ODM’s influence and the Luhya community’s political alignment.

The evolving dynamics between Raila and Luhya leaders like Wetang’ula will play a significant role in shaping the region’s political landscape.
