Kenyan rider John Njoroge Muya has been killed after colliding with a car travelling in the opposite direction at the Tour of Matabungkay, his Kenyan Riders team have confirmed.
The incident took place on Saturday at 10 am on stage two of the three-day amateur race, and while an ambulance was on the scene immediately, the 30-year-old Njorogeโs injuries were so severe that he later died in hospital.
The previous morning, Njoroge had won the 10km time trial that began the race and later carried the yellow leaderโs jersey into the first road stage of the race that takes place in the Matabungkay region of the Philippines.
The final day of the Tour will not be competed, with the organisers encouraging a โneutral, non-competitive ride, with the Kenyan Riders leading, to share and honour our loss,โ according to the Kenyan Riders.
Njoroge leaves behind a wife and a baby son, who will be looked after by the team as they recover from their loss.
