Motorists in the Nairobi CBD have expressed anger at the traffic situation in the city for the better part of Thursday morning and on to the afternoon as President Uhuru Kenyatta’s convoy snaked through the city to celebrate his return from the Hague.

Uhuru has been on the road since 9am this morning and used Outer Ring – Jogoo Road – Landies – Haile Selassie Avenue – Harambee Avenue route to Harambee House. Motorists gave accounts of having been stuck on the roads for long periods as crowds thronged the procession route to catch a glimpse of the president and his deputy who made several stops to address the crowds.

Demonstrations however emerged as a group of Nairobi residents started shouting anti-ICC slogans to call for the terminations of the president’s case at the Hague-based court.

The protesters who were mostly on Moi Avenue, Ronald Ngala, and Tom Mboya streets, carried placards and chanted Hatutaki ICC (We don’t want ICC) as they moved towards Harambee Avenue and eventually merged with the procession.

Uhuru while addressing the crowds that had followed his convoy since morning thanked his supporters for their prayers and said he is committed to driving the country towards development. “Kenyans are tired of politics and want development,” Uhuru said to a cheering crowd.

He added that Kenyans should start trusting one another and work together just as he and Ruto are doing. “Sikuwa na hofu” I was not afraid) when I went to the ICC. I believed in Ruto to run the country. Learn to trust one another,” Uhuru said.

Ruto who also addressed the mammoth crowds told those gathered to welcome the president so that he can carry on with his duties of leading the country.
