- Use of symbolical and historical songs/music
The retired president reign was full of historical and symbolical songs.
Moi used this tactic to bring Kenyans together and castigate people he claimed were enemies of the country.
The retired president official events and functions were full of such ย songs that in away bonded Kenyans together for 24 years during his reign.
Some of the songs and lyrics coined during Moiโs rule are โTawala Kenya Rais Moiโ, ‘Fimbo Ya Nyayo Yatuongozaโ and โSisi Wanakenya tumeunganaโ among others.
The use of lyrics earned Moi huge following especially among school-going children.
- ‘Nyayo’ Philosophy
The Nyayo philosophy saw the retired president establish a name for himself.
Moi advocated for development, peace and unity among ย Kenyans u through the Nyayo philosophy or slogan.
In fact many Kenyans mistook ‘Nyayo’ ย to be part of Moiโs name.
The philosophy rhymed well with the development projects he initiated.

People feared to discuss issues openly during Moiโs 24-year tenure as the countryโs second president.
The former president was feared and it was believed that one would be arrested for mentioning his name anyhow.
It is during Moiโs tenure that people and politicians who dared to question his style of leadership were arrested and detained at the famous Nyayo House torture chambers.
The Nyayo chamber stories were common during Moiโs era and people like ODM leader Raila Odinga were detained under the Nyayo chamber’s.
The late politician Kenneth Matiba also underwent through torture at the dreaded chambers.
- Rigid to constitutional reforms.
The retired president was reluctant to embrace constitutional reforms.
In 1991 he was forced to repeal section 2A of the constitution to allow for multi-party system.
Moi had adopted the single party system that saw his KANU party dominate.
- Propaganda
It is believed that Moi employed use of propaganda to confuse his political competitors.
He employed spies to seek information on his competitors and used it to punish them politically.
