A mock terror attack caused panic at the JKIA on Tuesday, some thinking a Kenya Airways plane had been hijacked by terrorists.
The airport conducted a drill whose scenario was the hijacking of a KQ flight set for Malindi by a group of terrorists. The ‘attackers’ who hijacked the flight with 30 passengers at 9am demanded food, refueling facilities and a flight plan to a choice destination.
The threat was ‘neutralised’ by the GSU Recce squad and casualties ‘evacuated’ to city hospitals by the Kenya Red Cross Society.
Regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organisation require the Kenya Airports Authority to carry out such drills to assess levels of preparedness and security standards.
In a statement to newsrooms on Tuesday, KAA lauded participants for a successful drill.
