President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed IG Joseph Boinnet to speed up investigations on the death of human rights lawyer, his client and taxi driver.

In a condolence message delivered by Kinangop MP Stephen Kinyanjui during the burial of Joseph Muiruri on Saturday at Rwanyambo village, Uhuru said the IG must ensure the killers are brought to book.

He said he was saddened by the killings of human rights lawyer Willy Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda and the taxi driver whose bodies were found dumped in Oldonyo Sabuk river.

A sombre mood engulfed Mukei location as family, friends, politicians and human right activist came together to pay their last respect to the late Muiruri.

Among those who attended the funeral were former head of public service Francis Kimemia, Senator Karue Muriuki, Nyandarua deputy governor Waithaka Mwangi, area woman representative Wanjiku Muhia, human rights activists among others.

Speaker after speaker condemned the killings and urged the government to ensure the perpetrators are held liable for the deaths.

Kimemia said the government still believes in police accountability and said there was a need to ensure rogue cops are apprehended.

“I encourage law abiding officers to serve and protect citizens,” Kimemia said.

Philip Langford, IJM vice president Africa, said they had lost a trustworthy and hard working friend who they considered one of their own.

Langford said his organisation will ensure justice prevails for Muiruri, Mwenda and Kimani .

Speaking on behalf of civil society, Kamau Ngugi said thorough investigations of groups within the police service that are abusing their powers to extort and kill innocent Kenyans must be done.
